Quintessential Tanzania

This 12-day itinerary is the quintessential example of a top-notch Northern Circuit safari experience combined with a luxurious beach holiday. With its visit to the Southern Serengeti, this safari is especially of interest from mid-December to mid-March, when you have excellent chances of witnessing the Great Wildebeest Migration right on your doorstep! Upon arrival in the safari capital of Arusha, enjoy the chance to recharge your batteries with an overnight at a working coffee plantation before hitting the safari circuit. You will spend the first couple of days of your safari exploring Tarangire National Park, where you will have ample time to see the park’s magnificent herds of elephants and marvel at the majestic baobab trees, a large proportion of which are more than 1,000 years old. From here you will travel to the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest unbroken caldera, formed 2.5 million years ago. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to some 25,000 animals and is densely populated with predators. It is one of the only places in Tanzania where you can actually succeed in spotting the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and buffalo), and has East Africa’s largest population of black rhino. En-route to the crater, you will have the chance to learn about one of Tanzania’s most famous tribes – the Maasai – by visiting a local Maasai village. The wildlife excitement continues as you head into the Serengeti National Park. The Serengeti is Tanzania’s oldest national park, and one of its most popular; it is no surprise that it is also a World Heritage Site. The park owes its name (which means “endless plains” in the Maasai language) to the southern plains, and it is in this part of the Serengeti that you will be based for 2 days and end the safari portion of your itinerary. With your head bursting with the amazing wildlife images of the past 6 days, you will leave the dusty roads and ever-surprising Tanzanian bush behind you as you fly to the Indian Ocean island of Zanzibar for the remainder of your holiday. Here you will have time to reflect on all you have seen and experienced, relax on the beach or at the pool, and take advantage of numerous optional activities, such as visiting Stone Town or taking a dhow cruise for some excellent reef snorkeling.
Your accommodation while on safari showcases the Sanctuary Lodges and Camps, which feature unique wilderness properties in areas of outstanding natural beauty. Each property is completely individual in its design and operated around the philosophy of “Luxury, naturally.” As part of the company’s commitment to low impact, high-quality tourism, there are never more than 15 cottages or tents in any lodge/camp. While in Zanzibar, you will be staying at the exclusive 5-star luxury Baraza Resort on the island’s eastern coast. Located along the Bwejuu-Paje beach, Baraza has been named one of the top 30 resorts in the world by the prestigious Conde Nast Traveler magazine. What better way to end your Tanzanian adventure!
